Mamma's Night Out

There is a certain security knowing that mom is close at hand, or that her presence is easily attainable in a short period of time in case of any 'baby emergency'. However, the sense of uncertainty settles like a cold realization of loneliness once the lights from mamma's car have faded down the road, not to return for an eternity (OK, actually three hours). This leaves dad with all the responsibilities; feeding baby, burping baby, entertaining baby, patting baby to sleep, diaper changes and everything else that was usually a team effort in dad's presence has now become his sole responsibility.

This was the case when Jennifer decided to return to her orchestral endeavors which require her absence every Wednesday night. That first time out is frightening with every possible catastrophe looming in a dark sky. Ethan and Dad: that was it. No one to tag team. So dad did what he new best. Ethan was loaded into his 'bouncy' seat and toted into the garage for lessons on motorcycle wrenching. This went relatively well with engine part explanations followed by a grunt from a mouth full of fist. This did not last long, however, as Ethan tired of the step-by-step instructions of draining fluid from a Harley-Davidson primary case and decided his eyelids were to heavy to keep open.

Deep sleep is quickly obtained by sessions of pacing around the yard and drive way. He likes the outdoors which has always proved a successful remedy for sleepiness and other general fussing fits. Tonight was the same. In 15 minutes of pacing the driveway, Ethan was asleep. Ethan slept for about an hour, which was just enough time to finish draining the primary case, call a few of dad's siblings and put tools away.

When Ethan woke, the drill was to feed a famished child. Luckily mamma, left a bit of herself behind, and Ethan took to the bottle (his first ever) like an old pro. Hopefully this is no indication of struggles later in life. By the time the feeding and burping were done, mom was arriving home again to the delight of dad and baby. No catastrophes or great moments of confusion this time. So maybe this whole 'dad' thing isn't all that bad.

The Casts are Off!

Finally, after two months of frustration and trips to Baltimore, MD, Ethan is not longer wearing casts on his legs and has graduated to his boots and bar! Ethan was diagnosed with bilateral clubfoot about a month after he was born. Fortunately it is not a severe case and the method for correction, the Ponseti Method, is non-surgical but has great success. Each casting day (every Friday) was an exercise in patience for both traffic on the road and an uncontrollable screaming baby. But now it is over. Here are some pictures and videos of an exited boy having his casts removed.

Cast Pictures
Cast Removal
Casts are Gone!

First Father/Son Outing

OK, so a trip to the gas station isn't really much of an outing. But when you have an infant who could turn on you at any minute without the protection of momma, then even the smallest of trips can be a challenge. Anyway, our little adventure started off with a pit stop at Starbucks, for an energy boost due to lack of sleep. Of course, there are four other cars in the drive-through, and Ethan decides it is time to test dad's patience. He begins to wail. Not much will pacify a baby when there are little option available, so the ear drum exercise continued until the we moved through the line and retrieved our happiness in a cup.

Fortunately the gas station was across the street, so we scrambled into the closest filling bay. Dad and Ethan bailed out of the car for some fresh air, which was the ticket. Ethan quieted down and the ear plugs were shed. Putting him back down was not an option, so dad had to proceed with doing a one handed fill-up of the car and two gas cans. Of course this probably looked as awkward as it felt since, one nice lady offered to do the pumping while dad comforted his forlorn child. Dad refused since was the challenge was nearly over. One kind man even closed a forgotten open door which was blocking another patron who also exhibited signs of understanding.

Having all tanks full of gas, Ethan settled back into his car seat for a home trip slumber that ended the first of many times father and son will spend together.

Videos can now be posted to the ScottWorks web site. So to keep with the theme of Ethan's birth, here are two videos that were created for Grandma and Grandpa in Mexico. These videos are of Ethan's mother preparing him for for his first adventure in a car seat. This is a two part movie for obvious reasons that will be apparent in the video.
Photo Gallery Updated

Hopefully you have noticed by now that the ScottWorks Family Web site has been entirely re-designed. With this re-design, the main page now includes a cleaner format for event posting and a complete listing (to the right) of related ScottWorks web pages. Maintenance of the site has also been greatly simplified. It seems any time a major event occurs, the web site receives and over-haul. Of course the major event in this case is the addition of a new family member, Ethan Russell Scott.

The ScottWorks photo gallery has also been updated. The gallery is a complete re-write to allow easier interaction. All the pictures for the last 11 years have been posted which means that the latest pictures of baby Ethan are now available for viewing. It is not perfect, so any comments or problems should be sent to the webmaster. Make sure you check it out very soon.

More Exciting News from Brenda

"I'm so excited to be heading back home to Laramie tomorrow. Packing is oh so much fun. Ok, maybe not. Not a big fan of moving, but it'll be worth it. I was released from the hospital therapies on May 9. I think hospitals are great, but I'm ready to be out of them and not have to go to one either though for a very long time hopefully. We had our final family conference going over where I am and the progress I've made. God has blessed me beyond what I or anyone else could've ever imagined.

All my therapists said they think I'll do great in whatever I'll have in my future. So, I pretty much have a clean bill of health again. They don't see any limitations that would significantly affect anything. Of course, I have to be careful and super cautious not to hit my head. Other than that though, not much else. I'm super careful about protecting my head now. I don't ever want to go through anything like this ever again. God has been gracious and brought me through it all beautifully though.

I'm so ready to be home again. My mom is getting really excited to get back home too. Me and my parents are going to make a trip to N. Dakota to see my Grandmas. It'll be so great to see them. Then, I'll be back home for good and my mom be back at her home.

Eight months of hospitals, being in them and having to go back to them for therapies, and I made it through. God has certainly blessed me with wonderful parents that helped me through all of this.

Thankyou for all the prayers that have been offered up on my behalf. They have had alot to do with where I am today."

Another Update from Brenda

I had to take a driving test for future liability reasons. I passed it w/ flying colors. Yay!! He said I did an excellent job of driving and that he would feel safe riding with me any time. People have asked me if I'm scared to drive now, I'm not though. I don't remember my accident at all. Thanks to God's safety mechnism He programed our brains with.

I have therapies until the 16th of May. My mom and dad are going to move me back up to Wyoming starting on the 17th probably. I finish my college class on the May 12th. I heard some good news about the class transferring in as the elective credit I need. I have lost so many credits transferring. It was such a big blessing to hear that it will transfer in.

God keeps continuing to amaze me with all He has done.

Update from Brenda

"I was only on the walker for 1 1/2 weeks. They tried a cane and crutches on me, but said I looked better without them. Yay! Ever since January 19, I have been walker and wheelchair free. I must say, it's a whole lot easier to teach yourself how to walk the second time around. God has shown me not to take even the seemingly little things, like walking, for granted. He has shown me a totally new outlook on life.

I left Craig on February 8. Now, I am doing therapies twice a week down here at St. Joseph's in Tucson. When I was at Craig, they were pretty sure I would have to plan on having a roommate again. Only a couple weeks after I got here though, they said I could most definitely go back to living on my own. That's the way I prefer it. It was such a blessing to hear that I'm "allowed" to live alone again. I don't need a babysitter. ha ha.

Alot of friends that I talk to on the phone, have been telling me that every time they talk to me, I sound a little bit more like the Brenda they knew before. I finally am feeling more and more like myself again. I thought I was lost, but I'm found again. I will be done with physical therapy in another week. I have speech and occupational therapies though until I'm done here in the middle of May. Then, I finally get to go home.

I am also taking a business elective that I need for my Mechanical Engineering degree down here at a community college. I just started it last Saturday. They prepared me to expect some changes in class. God blesses once again, it was just good 'ol class like usual.

I definitely am a believer in miracles. I have been called a miracle more than once by professionals that deal with this kind of injury all the time. I could have been a ton worse. I witnessed that being around alot of the patients at Craig and St. Joseph's too. I am definitely grateful that God chose to keep me on this earth for a little bit longer. He must have a plan for me."

Brenda Amazes Doctors

"For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their prayers." 1 Peter 3:12

Greetings Friends and Family! We trust you had a Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year. Clearly, God has heard the prayers of his people. Brenda continues to amaze the doctors with her progress and we'd like to share some important events with you that have occurred in the last couple weeks.

* As of Monday, January 8th, Brenda was finally allowed to take off her neck brace. The medical personnel told her to expect a lot of soreness/tiredness but she experienced NONE!
* As of Wednesday, January 10th, Brenda became WHEELCHAIR FREE and is solely using a walker. (and as of Mon, Jan 15 we understand she isn't always using the walker as a support like she has been told to do, so she continues to push herself to improve).
* On Wednesday, January 10th, Brenda moved from a semi-private room to a private room. However, that lasted exactly one night. The next day she was assigned a new roommate, her mother! These new accommodations are a smaller version of the apartment that Carol had been occupying, minus the cooking facilities so I think both of them will be even more excited to leave when Feb 9th arrives. :) Meanwhile, Carol has fixed the sleeper sofa with extra padding for herself until then...

Prayer Requests:
Carol reports that an area which Brenda has room for improvement is her speech, which is still somewhat slurred. Also, prayers for accommodations in Tuscon - there is the possibility of a 3 bedroom house available for short-term rent. but nothing has been finalized yet. Prayers for both Dave and Carol as they are separated during this time. Dave will not return back to Tuscon until Brenda is close to being released in Feb. The mission work, churches and new believers in Mexico.

New! Recent pictures of Brenda can be found at the Photo Gallery. Pictures of Thanksgiving with the family can also be found here.

"For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God. For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal." 1 Cor 4:15-18
